This year it fell on a Saturday, and Saturdays are always St Patrick’s Day Irish Gnome and Clover hippie shirt busy here at the Bates house. So busy that I write a schedule and “to do” list every Saturday morning, for all the family to see. On this particular St. Patrick’s Day, we had an Orthodontics appointment for one kid, a ballet recital for one kid, and a basketball game for one kid. We also had an appointment to meet with our financial advisor, did our weekly Costco run, took the dog to the dog park, cleaned out the cars, cleaned up the house, did the laundry, and I graded some papers. That was all done by dinner time. Dinner was Chinese take-out, and we had family Chinese take-out and movie night. We bought The Last Jedi and watched it as a family. It was the first time I’d seen it. I kind of wish I saw it in the theater now… some of the special effects would have been even better on a huge screen. Particularly this scene.

For about 20 minutes, I tried and tried to St Patrick’s Day Irish Gnome and Clover hippie shirt figure out what else she was in. I couldn’t do it, so finally I literally had to pause the movie and have my whole family wait while I Googled “Purple hair lady from Last Jedi actress.” Only when I learned that she is the actress from Jurassic Park did I restart the movie. She has a name and everything: Laura Dern. Anyway, that was my St. Patrick’s Day 2018. About 10 miles away from me, they dyed the Chicago River Green, like they do every year to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day: I didn’t go this year. I didn’t go last year. I’ve never gone to that. That’s for tourists and locals without kids. Fight huge crowds and cold weather to watch a river get dyed green? No thanks. I’d rather go to Costco.
