For most people, its a measure of sheer drumming exhibitionism. Nobody is perfect but if you can play drums you’re pretty close shirt, For example, some of the criteria people normally use to judge a drummer are drumming speed, amount of technicality used in a song, how willing they are to dominate the song, etc. So they may prefer drummers like Mike Portnoy or Joey Jordison, who are capable of blowing them away with pure power, speed and technique. If, however, your definition of “good”/”bad” is the degree to which a drummer complements the rest of the band and supports the song, Lars isn’t all that bad. There are great drummers who can achieve the best of both worlds, ie, come up with a flashy and skilful performance that suits the song perfectly. Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree or Danny Carey of Tool are good examples (note I’ve mentioned two progressive drummers. This is because I’m a prog fan and admire their work greatly). I’m a drummer myself and, in general, I choose to play to augment a song, not overwhelm it.

Lars is considered to be a bad drummer Nobody is perfect but if you can play drums you’re pretty close shirt because most of the people who listen to Metallica enough to comment on his drums are metal fans. Metal prizes virtuosity above other qualities and Lars is not very technically proficient. But I’ve been playing for twenty years, grew up playing in thrash metal bands and moved on to songwriting and other genres like prog and folk, and I think Lars is one of the most musical drummers out there. My favorite drummers are Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Stewart Copeland, and Lars Ulrich. The first two are commonly considered to be among the greatest practitioners of their instrument. Stewart Copeland’s work with The Police is regarded as some of the finest rock drummings ever. Lars is… well, Lars.
