Texans have a deeply ingrained cultural belief in separatism. They are the Lone Star State because their history recalls that they exist within the Union only as a favor to the United States. It’s a very precarious relationship where any Texas political leader could state his intention to secede from the Union and no one would think he was crazy for saying it. In fact, many would think it’s quite acceptable. That means that Texans feel that the US Military is an entity that exists outside the Texas Lone Star belief system.
